Chapter 13 - Three Applications

In looking at the nine steps and the four corners, it was clear that things need to happen in a definite order. Step 1 always needs to come before Step 2 and you can’t go directly from being unconscious to the Third Corner.

I have an image in my head of athletes building a ‘human tower.’ Here one young woman stands on the shoulders of the man at the base of the pyramid, while her companion vaults upwards to stand on her shoulders, to complete the structure. There is a definite order of business here: the man at the base needs to be in place before you can add the next player. If the base were to collapse, then the whole structure would come down.

It is the same with the Technique. Each Step builds on the Step before. You need to learn how to maintain your awareness of the whole - of all nine Steps - and you can’t just focus on one aspect at a time.

Up to now, in talking about the Technique, I have simplified things to a certain extent. I have made it sound as though it is something that applies just to the person who is practising the Technique. I now want to expand that picture and instead of one application, I am going to sketch out the possibility of there being three applications of the Technique. With this added level of complexity, the idea of one thing building on top of another - the human pyramid example - will also be important.
